Specializing in Solid-Surface Showers

If you’ve been browsing bathroom remodel ideas, you’ve likely encountered solid surface materials. This non-porous composite is made from mineral dust (typically alumina trihydrate), resins, and pigments. Solid surface comes in a variety of colors and patterns, some even resembling high-end natural stone. The two most common types of resins used are acrylic and polyester, though a combination of both is also available:

  • Acrylic-Based Solid Surface: Known for creating a seamless look, acrylic-based solid surfaces bond well with other materials. They have a matte finish and are highly durable.
  • Polyester-Based Solid Surface: This option is more budget-friendly but tends to be more brittle. It features a glossy finish and is UV-resistant, making it perfect for vibrant colors.
  • Acrylic-Polyester Hybrid: This material blends the best qualities of both types, offering a balanced option in terms of performance and price.

A professional installer can help you select the right solid surface material for your bathroom remodel.

10 Reasons to Use Solid Surface for Shower Walls

Solid surface has become a popular choice for bathroom remodels due to its combination of versatility, durability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of installation. It’s especially ideal for shower walls, thanks to its non-porous, waterproof nature. Here are ten key benefits:

1. Quick and Easy Installation
Because solid surface materials come in large sheets, they’re faster to install than traditional tile. A skilled bathroom remodeler can complete the job quickly, helping you achieve your dream bathroom in less time.

2. Affordable Price

While the average walk-in shower remodel costs around $6,700—sometimes reaching up to $15,000—a solid surface shower falls in the mid-range, with wall panels for a typical 70-square-foot shower priced between $3,500 and $8,400. Plus, solid surface is quicker to install than tile or stone, saving on labor costs. Tip: If you want a bathroom upgrade without the full remodel price tag, consider refreshing your shower or sink with solid surface.

3. Antimicrobial Properties
Bathrooms are breeding grounds for mold, mildew, and bacteria due to high moisture levels. Solid surface is non-porous, which means it resists mold, mildew, and bacteria—making it ideal for the high-humidity environment of a shower.

4. Low Maintenance
Thanks to its low porosity, solid surface is easier to clean than natural stone or tile. Unlike tile, which can trap dirt and grime in grout seams, you can simply wipe down solid surface with a cloth or sponge to maintain its shine and cleanliness.

5. No Need for Waterproofing
Because solid surface is typically installed as large panels instead of individual tiles, it doesn’t require waterproofing beneath it. This eliminates the risk of water leakage between tiles, making it an excellent choice for steam showers.

6. Shapeable and Customizable
Solid surface can be heated and molded into various shapes, including bathtubs and shower walls. This makes it easy to create a seamless look, where your counters and bathtub match perfectly in both material and design.

7. Endless Design Options
Available in a variety of colors and patterns—ranging from solid hues to stripes—solid surface provides flexibility for designing a unique bathroom. You can even opt for designs that mimic the look of natural stone, but at a more affordable price point.

8. Seamless Appearance
Unlike tile, which is assembled piece by piece, solid surface can be installed in large panels, creating a sleek, seamless look that enhances the modern aesthetic of your bathroom.

9. Refinishing Capabilities
Over time, surfaces in your shower may get scratched or worn. With solid surface, you can easily sand and refinish the material to restore it to its original condition, saving you the cost of replacements.

10. Safety Features
Though solid surface often has a glossy finish, it can be textured to provide a safer, slip-resistant surface—especially helpful for those with mobility concerns. This feature is particularly popular in walk-in shower conversions, which eliminate the risk of tripping over a tub wall.
