Granite vs Quartz: Which Is Better For A Bathroom Vanity?

A straight answer from a Colorado Springs crew that fits both on bathroom vanities, with the real trade-offs on durability, upkeep, cost and looks.

The Quick Take

Neither One Wins. It Depends On How You Live.

Quartz: nonporous, never needs sealing

Granite: natural stone, unique slabs

Both: very hard and scratch-resistant

Granite: a true natural-stone look

Quartz: the lowest-maintenance choice

Granite and quartz bathroom vanity tops

There is no winner here, only a fit. Quartz is made from ground stone bound with resin, so it leaves the factory sealed and stays that way. Granite is cut from a quarry, so no two tops are alike, and the trade is a coat of sealer now and then to keep it shrugging off water.

Colorado Springs pushes that trade in one direction. Most homes we work in have hard enough water to leave mineral spotting around a basin. On quartz you wipe it away and that is the end of it. On granite you wipe it away too, but only while the sealer is still doing its job, and that is the part people forget until a ring appears.

So: quartz if you would rather stop thinking about the counter. Granite if you want a slab nobody else has and the upkeep does not bother you. If the vanity is part of a bigger project, our bathroom remodel cost guide covers the full-room numbers.

Durability And Daily Life

The Difference Is Upkeep, Not Toughness

Neither of these is going to lose a fight with a bathroom. Both are harder than anything a household is likely to put on them, and both will still be there long after the taps have been changed. What separates them is what you have to do to keep them looking new.

Granite has pores. It comes to you sealed, and that sealer wants topping up over the years to stay stain proof. It is a ten minute job with a bottle from any hardware shop. Leave it long enough and a perfume bottle, a bar of soap or a splash of hair dye can leave a mark that will not simply wipe off.

Quartz has no pores to seal, so there is nothing to maintain. Toothpaste, make up and water all sit on top until you clear them away. Its one weakness is a bright south facing window, because years of hard direct sun can take the color out of the resin.

The short version:

Quality company - responsive when asked questions, encouraged personal choices. Never felt pressured to choose a specific product. Specifically appreciated their willingness to make adjustments- for My project the willingness to do a work through with the tub - results are great. Taylor & Steve were on schedule. Really appreciated that they kept to the schedule (done in 3 days!) and were always concerned about leaving the worksite clean when they left for the day. Follow up was great and made sure the project was complete. Highly recommend & will definitely use them for the next bathroom remodel!

Questions, Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Is granite better than quartz for a bathroom vanity?

No, and anyone who says otherwise is selling one of them. Granite gives you a slab that exists once. Quartz gives you a surface that never needs sealing and will not stain. For a bathroom vanity most people we quote pick quartz, because a vanity gets hand soap, toothpaste and make up on it every day and nobody wants to think about sealer.

Both will see out decades if they are fitted properly. The difference is what that costs you in attention. Quartz holds its finish on its own. Granite holds its finish as long as the sealer is kept up, and starts to mark once it is not.

Price follows the slab, the color and the thickness far more than it follows the word granite or quartz. A plain granite can land under a designer quartz, and the other way round. We price the top with the rest of the job and put it in writing before anything starts. Our bathroom remodel cost guide has the project ranges.

Quartz, comfortably, and the reason is maintenance rather than looks. It has no pores, so water, toothpaste and cosmetics sit on the surface until they are wiped away. Granite is a fine choice too if what you want is real stone and you are happy to reseal it.

Granite is sealed when we fit it and wants that repeating over the years. Quartz is never sealed, because there is nothing to seal into. If you want the fitting to be the last time you think about the surface, that is the whole argument for quartz.
