It is a molded composite panel that forms the shower wall as a single surface rather than as tiles with grout between them. The base and the walls go in as a system, which is why there is no mortar bed and no curing time.
For most households, yes, and the reason is maintenance rather than looks. Tile can be beautiful and we are not going to pretend otherwise. But grout is porous, it needs resealing, it marks with hard water, and it is where a shower usually starts failing. Solid surface removes that surface entirely.
